Quyết Thắng cooperative will be the first of its kind in the northern province of Hưng Yên to ship a batch of fresh longan to Europe, director of the cooperative Trần Văn Mý has said.

To fulfil send the 30 tonnes of the fruit to the fastidious market, the co-operative had to follow a strict production procedure.

In the 2021 crop, the cooperative has 30ha of the fruit grown under VietGAP standards. However, its output is projected to be down by 40 per cent compared to last year due to poor weather.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade and Hưng Yên authorities yesterday held its largest-ever international conference to promote longan and other local agricultural products .

The conference, held both online and in-person, was connected with 15 sites at home and nearly 60 others in 21 countries and territories such as the UK, Australia, India, Poland and Belgium.

Hưng Yên is home to about 4,800ha of longan, of which more than 1,300ha have met VietGAP standards. The province expects to harvest about 50,000-55,000 tonnes of the fruit this year, 15-20 per cent higher than last year’s output. – VNS
