On 3 September 2025, with the coordination and support of the Viet Nam Trade Office in Sweden, a delegation from Gothenburg Port—the largest port in Sweden and a key maritime gateway for Northern Europe—paid a working visit to SSIT (SP-SSA International Terminal) in Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged updates on operations, transport capacity, port infrastructure, expansion plans, and especially initiatives to develop green and smart port models. This visit represents a concrete step forward following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024 between Gothenburg Port and Vietnamese partners, a result strongly facilitated by the Trade Office.

As Northern Europe’s leading logistics hub, Gothenburg Port currently handles about 30% of Sweden’s total import and export cargo, with particular strengths in container shipping, liquid bulk, and renewable energy transport. Meanwhile, SSIT is one of Viet Nam’s most modern deep-water ports, capable of accommodating the world’s largest container vessels and contributing significantly to cargo transshipment capacity in southern Viet Nam.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen practical cooperation through information sharing, partner networking, and the application of advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency, optimize logistics, and reduce emissions. A key long-term goal is to gradually establish a direct maritime shipping route between Viet Nam and Northern Europe. This would not only expand opportunities for Vietnamese goods to penetrate more deeply into European markets, but also enable Nordic products to reach Viet Nam and the wider Southeast Asian region more swiftly.
