Continuing his State visit to the Kingdom of Denmark, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam met with Speaker of the Danish Parliament Henrik Frandsen in Copenhagen on the afternoon of October 19 (local time).

During the meeting, Speaker Henrik Frandsen warmly welcomed General Secretary and President To Lam, his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly and the high-level Vietnamese delegation on their first State visit to Denmark.

Emphasizing that Denmark is proud to have been among the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1971, the Danish Speaker expressed confidence that General Secretary and President To Lam’s visit, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, would provide fresh impetus for strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

General Secretary and President To Lam congratulated Henrik Frandsen on his election as Speaker of the Danish Parliament and expressed his hope that, in his new capacity, he would continue to support Vietnam and make positive contributions to bilateral friendship and cooperation.

He reaffirmed that Vietnam consistently attaches great importance to its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Denmark, which it regards as one of its important and trusted partners in the Nordic region and the European Union (EU).

Discussing bilateral relations, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the steady consolidation and positive development of Vietnam–Denmark relations over the past 55 years, evolving from traditional development cooperation to the Comprehensive Partnership established in 2013 and the Green Strategic Partnership in 2023. These milestones have laid a solid foundation for elevating bilateral relations to a new level.

Both sides highly appreciated the positive contributions made by the two countries’ parliaments in strengthening political trust, reinforcing the legal framework, promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation, and facilitating people-to-people exchanges, thereby creating favourable conditions for the comprehensive development of bilateral relations.

Building on this foundation, General Secretary and President To Lam called on the Danish Parliament to continue supporting and promoting the effective implementation of cooperation agreements between the two governments, particularly in economics, trade, investment, green transition, renewable energy, science and technology, innovation, education and training, and the development of high-quality human resources.

He also encouraged greater exchanges of experience in developing institutional and legal frameworks for digital transformation, the green economy, the circular economy and climate change response.

Speaker Henrik Frandsen highly appreciated the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Denmark and affirmed the Danish Parliament’s support for strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in areas that align with Denmark’s strengths and Vietnam’s development needs.

He expressed his wish for the two countries to further promote people-to-people exchanges and enhance coordination within the framework of Vietnam–EU relations.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between their respective parliaments through regular exchanges of delegations at all levels, particularly parliamentary leaders, specialized committees and parliamentarians, including female and young parliamentarians.

They also agreed to expand exchanges of experience in legislative activities, parliamentary oversight, decision-making on major national issues, building the rule of law, improving national governance and ensuring social welfare.

Both sides further agreed to strengthen coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums, leveraging the role of their legislatures in promoting multilateralism, respect for international law, responses to global challenges, and contributions to peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development.

Exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two leaders emphasized the importance of upholding the United Nations Charter, respecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, and resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law.

Regarding the East Sea (South China Sea), General Secretary and President To Lam called on the Danish Parliament to continue supporting the position of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on maintaining peace and stability, ensuring maritime and aviation security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight, and resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On this occasion, General Secretary and President To Lam conveyed the warm greetings and an invitation from Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Tran Thanh Man to Speaker Henrik Frandsen to visit Vietnam in the near future.

The meeting concluded in a warm, cordial and open atmosphere, marked by substantive and constructive exchanges.
