At the invitation of His Majesty King Frederik X and Her Majesty Queen Mary of Denmark, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam, accompanied by his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly and a high-level Vietnamese delegation, arrived at Copenhagen International Airport on the morning of October 19 (local time), beginning a State visit to the Kingdom of Denmark from October 19 to 21, 2026.
An official welcoming ceremony for General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse was solemnly held at Copenhagen International Airport, presided over by King Frederik X and Queen Mary.
The King and Queen of Denmark personally welcomed General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse at the foot of the aircraft stairs. The Royal Life Guards Band performed a ceremonial salute, followed by the national anthem ceremony. The Royal Master of Ceremonies then invited General Secretary and President To Lam and King Frederik X to inspect the guard of honour and introduced the officials from both sides.
Following the welcoming ceremony, General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse, together with the King and Queen of Denmark, laid a wreath at a memorial in Copenhagen.
Denmark was among the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1971 and has remained one of Vietnam’s important partners and longstanding friends for more than half a century. Bilateral relations have been continuously strengthened, expanded and elevated to new heights, notably through the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership in 2013 and the Green Strategic Partnership in 2023.
The visit is expected to further strengthen and deepen political trust, identify long-term cooperation priorities and strategic directions, and advance bilateral relations towards greater comprehensiveness and depth.
The visit will also provide fresh impetus for stronger cooperation in economics, trade, investment, science, technology and innovation, in line with the development priorities and needs of both countries.
Vietnam is entering a new phase of development, accelerating the transformation of its growth model based on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, while advancing the green transition and sustainable development. These are areas in which Denmark possesses considerable strengths and expertise.
The two countries have significant potential to complement each other’s strengths, opening up opportunities to expand cooperation beyond the exchange of experience and policy expertise towards investment, technological research and development, and high-quality human resource training. Such cooperation is expected to generate new products, solutions and drivers of economic growth.
Today, Denmark has become one of the European Union’s leading investors in Vietnam and stands out among Vietnam’s Nordic partners for its high-quality investment and commitment to green development. Projects undertaken by major Danish enterprises, particularly in seaports, maritime transport, logistics and green industries, provide tangible evidence of the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation.
The State visit by General Secretary and President To Lam to Denmark takes place as the two countries mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Building on 55 years of friendship, political trust and fruitful cooperation, the visit offers an important opportunity for both countries to define strategic directions, elevate bilateral relations to a new level in the next stage of development, and promote Vietnam–Denmark cooperation as a model partnership between Vietnam and a Nordic country.
